January Unit Topic: SELF-ADVOCACY
 
WORK SKILLS (Periods 1 & 6)
 
Job Club Topic #1:Support Service Exploration - Students will match community locations with a product or service.

Job Club Topic #2: Applications & Interviews - Students will respond to personal information questions related to an interview.

Job Club Topic #3: Job Interest Surveys - Students will complete an on the job survey form. Each student will rate his or her response to the jobs that are identified. Students are expected to recognize tasks within given jobs and identify these tasks as those they like or do not like. 

Job Club Topic #4: Work Attitudes - Various work attitudes will be presented for discussion, role-playing and learning: Have a Positive Attitude, When a Task is Finished, Move Onto Another, and Use the Break Room During Breaks. Students will be expected to demonstrate work skills with the necessary support, including staying on tasks, following directions, responding to authority and asking for help. 
 
Job Club Topic #5: Volunteer Jobs - Students will discuss various volunteer opportunities and the difference between pay and volunteer jobs.
 
Throughout the month students will also work in small groups to complete work based tasks including counting/delivering papers, collecting/sorting aluminum and plastic recyclables, emptying bins/collecting paper recycling, shredding paper, setting the table, grouping utensils, cutting, sorting, and completing collection sheets for labels for education, disinfecting doorknobs, etc.
 
DAILY LIVING SKILLS (Periods 2 & 4)
 
Daily Living Club Topic Story 1: My IEP Meeting - Students will read story, answer comprehension questions and discuss IEP meetings. 

Daily Living Club Topic Story 2: Making My Own Choices - Students will read story, answer comprehension questions and discuss their personal rights and responsibilities in daily living, community and vocational situations.

Daily Living Club Article #1: Choices in My Life - Read article, discuss how there are numerous times a day when personal decisions are made and who makes these decisions.
 
Daily Living Club Article #2: What is Self-Advocacy? - Read article, discuss hat the word advocate means and how students can adovcate or "speak up" for themselves in daily situations. 

Daily Living Club Article #3:Making Good Choices - Read article and discuss making choices in our lives and the consequences of those choices. 

Daily Living Club Rights & Responsibilities - Self Advocacy- Discuss difference between a right and a responsibility. Students will be expected to identify basic personal rights and responsibilities as they relate to self-advocacy
 
Daily Living Club Problem Solving Game - Self Advocacy - Students will respond to the following questions after each scenario is presented in game - Is this an emergency? Who can  solve or help you solve this problem? What will you do or say? 

FUNCTIONAL MATH  
 Students will participate in the banking process to the highest level of their abilities. They will use calculator to add/subtract, write demographic information, read and write dollar amounts to $200, sign name, read and write number words, orally identify parts of a check and deposit slip, write date, state purpose of a check, deposit slip, and debit/ATM card, the receipt, and a PIN.

FUNCTIONAL READING 

Students will read a weekly newspaper article based on their individual reading level. Students will use icons to identify unfamiliar vocabulary words. They will answer comprehension questions related to article.
