Week of September 29, 2014



PERSONAL BINDERS       
     Please continue to check binders daily. Important notes regarding lunch money, gym clothes, special events, etc. will be in front pocket of binder.

DAILY LIVING SKILLS
     Students will participate in the creation of a monthly newsletter.      
     Students will take end of unit individual oral assessments.

WORK SKILLS
     Classroom Vocation Activities-Students will participate in simulated work activities.
     
MATH
     Money Matters - This activity simulates the real-world experience of paying bills and balancing a checking account, and will be used continuously throughout the month. This week students will pay 1 bill & receive a benefits check. They will record their withdrawal & deposit in their check register.
     What's in My Wallet - This activity presents opportunities for counting out various amounts of money in a person's wallet. Provided are daily scenarios that require team members to count the money available and determine if there is enough to make a designated purchase.
   
READING - This week's current events story is called "Broadway Buddies.” Students will read an adapted article based on their instructional level and complete corresponding activities. At the end of the week students will follow a recipe to make “Performer Pizzas.”

DAILY LIVING SKILLS
     Students will use greeting cards to practice purposeful writing.

WORK SKILLS
     Work Attitudes-Students will role-play job scenarios dealing with following directions, getting along with others, and being honest.
     Classroom Vocation Activities-Students will participate in simulated work activities.

     Money Matters - This activity simulates the real-world experience of paying bills and balancing a checking account, and will be used continuously throughout the month. This week students will pay 1 bill & receive a pay check. They will record their withdrawal & deposit in their check register.
     What's in My Wallet - This activity presents opportunities for counting out various amounts of money in a person's wallet. Provided are daily scenarios that require team members to count the money available and determine if there is enough to make a designated purchase.
     Time Matters - Activities in this lesson focus on understanding time and planning a schedule.
     3-Way Planning-Students will determine priorities for spending and saving money.

READING - This week's current events story is called "Hispanic Heritage .” Students will read an adapted article based on their instructional level and complete corresponding activities. At the end of the week students will follow a recipe to make “Tasty Tacos.”

FYI
Please return permission slips for fair ASAP. Please remember to send either a packed lunch or money for lunch. Students will be outdoors all day so please dress accordingly. Sometimes it’s muddy near the animals, so it’s a good idea to wear older shoes. Students are permitted to wear Spartan t-shirts with school approved bottoms.      Rights & Responsibilities on the Job-It’s important to understand that with the privelage of individual rights, comes personal responsibility.
     Problem Solving Game - Trouble at Work

WORK SKILLS
     AM and PM Jobs - delivering newspapers, clerical tasks, recycling, custodial tasks
     Applications & Interviews—Students will fill out application for the job chosen in previous lesson and role-play a corresponding job interview.
     Job Interest Surveys-Factory, Child Care, Housekeeping, & Building Jobs are explored.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR CLASS THIS WEEK?

DAILY LIVING SKILLS 
     "Keeping a Job" - Students will read story and discuss how they should behave at work and why they want to keep a job. They will participate in an activity called "Good Work Decisions." In this activity, students will follow Kelly through decisions she has made at work. The class will read each of the scenarios and decide if Kelly made a good or bad decision. If Kelly made a bad decision, students will identify the correct decision. 

      "Getting Along with Others" - This article focuses on how to get along with co-workers by providing scenarios. Students will discuss what will happen to a co-worker who does not work well with others. Students will participate in an activity called "Help Me Get Along at Work." This activity gives students a chance to role-play positive and negative responses to issues that may arise in the workplace.

     Job Exploration - Students will explore specify jobs within different job categories. After reading and discussing both help wanted ads, students will select the job that most closely matches their preferences and skills. Students will then apply for this job in a later lesson.

Week of September 1, 2014

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR CLASS THIS WEEK?

PERSONAL BINDERS - Students will continue using daily sign in sheets. Some students will be given advanced sign in sheets and will be asked to find elapsed times. Students also will begin using grooming checklists. Please check binders each night for important notes regarding lunch money, gym clothes, permission slips, etc. 

DAILY LIVING SKILLS 
     "Getting a Job." This story is about Chad who is eager to have a paying job in the community. Where will he begin? What kind of skills will he need? How can he get these skills? Students will find the answers to these questions and more as we discuss the story. Students will also explore positive work skills and their personal resumes. These items will be added to their Transition Binder. 

     "Following Directions at Work" - Students will read story and discuss ways in which directions can be given and what happens when directions are not followed. Everyone will participate in an activity called "How's My Attitude?" This activity expands upon attitudes when following directions, especially when asked to do something that is out of the normal routine.
