May 2019

The topic of basic laundry care is presented in this month's unit titled, "Clean and Green." The unit lessons will provide lessons and activities for understanding the basics of laundry care, including laundry practices that help to protect our Earth. As we assist our young adults in the transition from school to work, it is necessary that they receive training in the steps of doing laundry, from pre-treating stains and sorting clothes, to reading care tags and properly putting clothes away. Understanding the basics of laundry care and green laundry options are important concepts that are emphasized throughout this month’s unit.

The topic stories address the two main topics of this unit; laundry routines and green laundry skills. The first story takes place in a laundromat and outlines the many steps that are involved in basic laundry care. Laundry skills, laundry products and how to care for different types of clothes are addressed in this story. The second story introduces green laundry habits by following a young woman that is preparing to teach green laundry activities at the nature center where she works. This story takes a closer look at how changing your laundry habits can help protect the Earth. The three articles provide more information on laundry skills and allow learners to practice important laundry skills, like reading care tags and selecting laundry products that meet their needs and preferences.

Regular monthly lessons are provided which offer the opportunity for young adults to use their understanding of laundry care while solving practical math and money skills. Banking and budgeting are addressed. Daily living skills involving cooking are part of a regular monthly lesson, offering five recipes. Social and communication skills are the focus of lessons presenting social trivia and everyday scenarios where laundry care is involved.

Employment continues to be a regular focus for several lessons each month. Lessons include exploring different jobs, reading job ads, completing job applications and practicing interview skills. Realistic scenarios address job skills and interactions at work. The final lesson highlights volunteering as a way to practice job skills and gain practical work experience.
